RAVENNA: NOT ONLY ART
Ravenna is located in the middle of a region called “Romagna”. It is a pleasant and quiet town of about 130.000 inhabitants. Its historical centre is a pedestrian area and the citizens, for pleasure and for convenience, often use bicycles. Tourists are always surprised by the coming and going of bicycles and by the preference of Ravenna’s citizens for this traditional mean of transport. For people who wish to really savour the atmosphere of Ravenna, it is possible to rent bikes. Moreover many hotels offer this service free of charge
HANDICRAFT
All the towns in the
Ravenna area are very proud of their folk traditions. The following events are
celebrated through out the year: the Marriage of the Sea (Cervia), the Feast of
Saint Michele Feast (Bagnacavallo) a folk ceremony of medieval origin dedicated
to the patron Saint , the Forgotteen Fruits Feast ( Casola Valsenio).
One of the most important products of local handicraft is the CERAMIC ART OF
FAENZA, made according to an ancient tradition, and the typical STAMPE
ROMAGNOLE, strong canvas or linen prints made according to formulas developed in
the countryside in the 18th century.
In Ravenna there are many Art Mosaic Schools such as: the Istituto del Restauro,
the Accademia delle Belle Arti and workshops specialized in modern mosaic
production. It is possible to attend Mosaic Courses in order to discover the
craft secrets of this ancient art.
We would also suggest visiting local markets with fine displays of crafts of our
region, for instance those in Ravenna, Lugo, Bagnacavallo, Cervia, Casola
Valsenio and Faenza.
GASTRONOMY
We are very proud of our gastronomic tradition. It
has a rural origin and is simple enough but very tasty!!.
Our HOMEMADE PASTA is famous everywhere, whilts another speciality of the area
is the PIADINA, a sort of plain pizza. Naturally, high-quality fish is the chief
speciality of the coastal restaurants.
In the surroundings of Ravenna some fine wines (DOC) are produced, such as
ALBANA, SANGIOVESE, TREBBIANO and wines of ancient tradition, among them “CAGNINA”,
a red wine of Byzantine origin.
