RAVENNA AND ITS SURROUNDINGS

The Ravenna area offers many interesting opportunities for visitors who wish to stay in these parts for more than one day.

Not far from Ravenna are places of great natural beauty, such as the pinewoods of san Vitale and Classe described by Dante and Boccaccio in their poems and painted by Botticelli.
Near the river Lamone there is Punte Alberete, a lagoon area protected by WWF and the Natural Park of Delta del Po.
This zone also has an historical importance, because the Italian hero of the Risorgimento, Giuseppe Garibaldi stayed here in August 1849, during his escape from the Austrians. In the small village named Mandriole, it is possible to visit the house where Anita, Garibaldi’s wife, died.
In the neighbourhood of Ravenna there is the hut where Garibaldi took refuge during his escape.

For sea-lovers, a few minutes from the centre of Ravenna, there are many seaside resorts; for instance in Marina di Ravenna the modern harbour Marinara is very attractive for people fond of sailing.

Along the Highway Main road Adriatica, some pleasant seaside resorts can be found, such as Milano Marittima famous for its discos and coffee shops and Cervia, ancient town famous for its Salinas and thermal baths.
 

 

The small Repubblic of san Marino is located at about one hour from Ravenna, noted for its atmosphere and its amazing view.

Brisighella is a medieval town in the hills near Ravenna. It is possible organize tours in order to visit its famous castle, the Pieve del Tho and the so-called “Via degli Asini”. It is worth tasting the gastronomic speciality of this area: the oil “Brisighello”.

Faenza, famous city of art, is about 30 minutes from Ravenna. It is worth visiting the International Museum of Ceramics, Palazzo Milzetti, the Cathedral and some ceramic workshops.

Specially recommended a visit to the Villa Romana in Russi, where it is possible to admire mosaics pavements dating back to the 1st century A.D.

Following the Main road to Bologna make time for a visit to Bagnacavallo, a medieval town with characteristic porches, a circular square Piazza Nuova and the Pieve of San Pietro in Sylvis, decorated with frescos dating from the 14th century.

 

 

At few minutes from Bagnacavallo there is Lugo famous for its Wednesday market, one of the most ancient in the region. Among the monuments of this town are: the Rocca Estense, the Pavaglione, the Rossini Theatre decorated by Bibiena, the monument and the museum dedicated to Francesco Baracca the famous hero of the 1st World War
