RAVENNA: CAPITAL OF THE MOSAIC

Ravenna is a unique city of art with 8 monuments included in the Unesco Heritage List. Visiting the town is a charming experience, a sort of travel in the past from the 1st century AD to the fall of the Western Roman Empire, the Ostrogoth dominium and the Byzantine period.
Traces of the glorious past of Ravenna still live not only in its wonderful monuments but also in its magic atmosphere.

In the 1st century AD the Roman Emperor AUGUSTUS chose the ancient lagoon town of Ravenna to build a military harbour; at the beginning of the 5th century Ravenna became capital of the Western Roman Empire, one century later the Ostrogoth king Theodoric chose Ravenna as the seat of his rule and finally, from the middle of the 6th century to the 8th century, it was the capital of the Exarchate, that to say, a Byzantium dominium.
These events made the history of Ravenna unique in the world; this town was the Imperial capital during a period of real crisis in the Roman Empire. It was a kind of bridge between East and West, town of the mosaic as symbol of its imperial power.
